Fun Summer Idea’s For The Family

Being a parent is always challenging but summertime brings a whole new set of obstacles to overcome. There’s the heat and the bugs, the cuts and the scrapes, and the inevitable “Mom or Dad I’m bored” heard by every parent at least once over the summer.  It’s so easy to let them watch TV all day or even indulge in video games. It’s important to limit screen time for your children to one hour a day for those who are less than 12 years and two hours for teens. This restriction can be done by steering them towards screen free activities that you all can enjoy together.  Here’s some great idea’s for the family this summer.

    1. Visit a Farm! Find a farm with blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes, watermelons, flowers, etc., and get picking.
    2. Go Hiking!
    3. Play in the sprinklers, slip and slide, and squirt each other with the hose on warm days.
    4. Cook out…frequently. Go beyond the burgers. Try veggies or fish. The kids might like them more if they come off the grill!
    5. Build a fire and cook some hot dogs and marshmallows.
    6. Camp in the woods!  Live a little!
    7. Camp in on a rainy day!
    8. Stargaze and see what constellations you can recognize.
    9. Catch lightning bugs. And then watch them flicker away into the night.
    10. Redecorate the kids rooms.
    11. Create a nature scavenger hunt.
    12. Visit a nearby nature center or park.
    13. Invite friends over for a game night. Have a kids’ games table and an adult one too.
    14. Build a tree house.
    15. See an air show.
    16. Go to a botanical garden or start your own.
    17.  Visit state parks that are within driving distance.
    18. See what the drive-ins are showing.
    19. Make a lemonade stand.
    20. Visit a water park.
    21. Make your own popsicles.
    22. Have a picnic.
    23. Play with bubbles.
    24. Hopscotch and other sidewalk chalk.
    25. Go fishing.
    26. Play some sports just for fun.
    27. Take bike rides and walks.
    28. Make homemade ice cream.
    29. Visit museums.
    30. Feed some ducks and animals at a local pond or lake.
    31. Build a birdhouse or bat house.
    32. Go to the zoo.
    33. Visit a beach.
    34. Build a fort.
    35. Jump rope.
    36. Fly a kite.
    37. Learn a new card game.
    38. Climb trees.
    39. Plant something.
    40. Have sleepovers.
    41. Let the kids make dinner.
    42. Volunteer at the local animal shelter.
    43. Paint a mural in the basement or garage.
    44. Play tag and hide and go seek.
    45. Learn to sew.
    46. Go to a concert as a family.
    47. Ride bikes to the ice cream place!
